Shultzy's OktoBEERfest recap
2010 was another great year for OktoBEERfest at Shultzy's.
We started out by getting a shipment of the award-winning Dogtoberfest Märzen from Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick, MD. We had been trying to get this back-to-back GABF gold medalist for two years, and in finally happened in 2010. Shultzy's got twenty-four 58-liter kegs and was the ONLY bar in Seattle with Dogtoberfest.
We also added another special OktoBEERfest treat in 2010, Schneider's Edel-weisse. Schneider, the pre-eminent German weissbier brewer for six generations, brews Edel-weisse as their beer to celebrate Oktoberfest, and we managed to be the only people in Seattle serving that, as well.
OktoBEERfest started on September 18th (the starting day for Oktoberfest in Munich) with a packed house for the UW Huskies-Nebraska football game and four different Oktoberfest beers on tap. Cards for the Shultzy's OktoBEERfest Liter club went fast, and by Tuesday evening, Steve Bunn had already enjoyed 1-liter mugs of 12 different Oktoberfest beers to take the 2010 Speed Championship.
Well, the Nebraska game didn't turn out quite as we'd hoped for the Oktoberfest kickoff, but the Huskies made up for it on October 3rd, the night of Shultzy's Official Oktoberfest celebration. Shultzy's was packed, and everyone's attention on the Huskies upset victory over USC -- we even had to delay the tapping of the ceremonial keg until Erik Folk made his winning field goal. With the Huskies victory, the ceremonial keg of Hacker-Pschorr was tapped and the Huskies celebration/OktoBEERfest party was in full swing.

As our extended OktoBEERfest celebration rolled on, so did the variety of Oktoberfest and harvest beers, reaching a record number of 28! If anyone knows of a bar anywhere that served more different Oktoberfest/harvest beers, we'd love to hear about it.
For those of you interested, here's the final list:

Over 75 kegs of OktoBEERfest beers were poured, over 1,000 liter beers were enjoyed, and 41 hardy men and women made the 2010 OktoBEERfest liter club, earning their own liter beer mug and their name on a plaque at Shultzy's. And the hardiest of them all was Travis White, 2010 "King of the Märzens", who managed to have a liter of all 28 OktoBEERfest offerings. WOW!
